“What Happens To My Dog If I Have A Car Accident?

This isn’t meant to frighten you but it was something that I was thinking about before, during and after my 1st road trip with all the dogs from Florida to Sugarcreek, Ohio.  OMG!  Just the thought of all this now is making just so paranoid and so thankful we made it there and back with no issues.  Before I started my adventure to UCAMP21 (The most awesome NüCamp Teardrop Rally EVER!!!) I was mentally preparing for the trip.  I had to do this almost 17 hour drive in two days all the while I had four dogs in the back seats in car seats and one “Sleeping Caboose” as I called it and a Luxury Seat in the front in case one needed extra attention! lol  My mission was to successfully make them as comfortable as possible.  I will attach a video so that you can all see what my thought process was before this event and show you how neurotic I am when it comes to keeping my kids safe!

With all of this in place this sadly to say will still not be enough in the event we were to get into a car accident.  So I really sat and thought about the things that I would do and I think this is a pretty good starting point for all pet owners traveling with pets.

  1. FOOT STOMP – Have your pets microchipped with the correct telephone number and address along with dog tags.
  2. BIGGER FOOT STOMP – Purchase a GPS Pet tracker for their collars.  During an accident, there is a very good possibility that if he/she is not injured they will run as ran away as possible.  I want to tell all of you that I have a “Whistle” trackers on both of my cats 24/7 and on the dogs when traveling in the car.
  3. You must first realize that if you’re hurt, you’re going to be taken to the hospital more than likely. And just so you know EMT's are not ALL trained in basic first aide of an animal. but what I did find out is that more and more states are giving that training to their EMTS's and first responders. If you don’t have anyone nearby that can pick up your dog, he’s probably going to be taken to the nearest animal shelter. Unfortunately some cities don’t have animal shelters or even animal control so knowing what to ask, who to ask, what phone numbers and addresses to get, if possible, is crucial. Is it animal control? Get this information –
  4. IMMEDIATELY:
  • Name of animal control agency
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Contact person
  • When you can pick up your dog

      5.  GET ON FACEBOOK if you are able…

  •  Post the date and time of accident
  • Include the city name, road or highway name
  • List all the names, phone numbers and other information you collect and share it.
  • Ask for help.
  • Give your cell phone number, city name and what hospital/police station you’re going to.

By you sharing where you are, who has your dog, the city, the address and the phone number, your friends and relatives can come to your aid and might be able to help your dog if you’re unable.
